RodKnee Fishing was founded in November 2023 by Mike South and Rich Batt, inspired by a common problem and an innovative solution. Rich, an avid angler, frequently struggled with his two-piece fishing rod becoming tangled during transport and storage. Frustrated by this, he turned to Mike, a skilled engineer, to design a holder to keep the rod and line secure. This conversation sparked the creation of the RodKnee, a unique product designed to prevent damage and tangling to two-piece fishing rods.
What sets RodKnee apart is its innovation. As one of the first products of its kind, it’s been engineered and thoughtfully tested to meet the needs of everyday anglers. Proudly made in the United States, RodKnee is manufactured in Omaha, Nebraska, with its design and testing done in Southwest Iowa. RodKnee is more than just a product; it’s a testament to what happens when creativity, perseverance, and community support come together.
Like many small business owners, Mike and Rich quickly realized that innovation was just the beginning. They had to learn the ins and outs of running a business, from bookkeeping and accounting to taxes and operations. Despite the steep learning curve, their passion for the product and commitment to their business kept them moving forward.
A significant milestone came in December 2024 when a TikTok video featuring the RodKnee went viral, earning over 190,000 views. This exposure, combined with their participation in the Omaha Boat Show, gave Mike and Rich valuable opportunities to connect with potential customers, gather feedback, and expand their network.
As of May 2025, RodKnee is open for preorders here and production is scheduled for June 2025. Mike and Rich are excited about the future, not just for this product, but for the broader vision they have for their business. Their ultimate goal is to grow RodKnee into a full-time venture, transitioning from a side project to a sustainable enterprise.
Reflecting on their journey, Mike credits the Iowa SBDC with playing a key role in their progress. He worked closely with Josh Baker, a Business Counselor at the Iowa Western SBDC, finding the experience both helpful and encouraging. The SBDC connected him with valuable resources and programs, providing support in areas like business management, technology, market research, and marketing.
