Growing up, Amanda Zagloba was surrounded by a family of crafters. From embroidery to crochet, Amanda found a passion for all things crafting. For many years, she pursued a career as a librarian, leading various crafting programs at the library. Amanda also spent time in the art and music department in the Chicago Public Library where she led the arts and craft program.
As her passion for crafting grew, she recognized the need for a craft store specializing in embroidery, so in June 2024, Amanda opened Prairie Rose Needleworks on Main Street in Ames.
The planning behind Prairie Rose Needleworks began in April 2023 when Amanda started her business plan. That May, she contacted the Iowa SBDC and was connected with ISU SBDC Regional Director, Leah Locke. Through collaboration with Leah, Amanda found a realtor, applied for funding, and received additional valuable assistance that led to the opening of Prairie Rose Needleworks.
Prairie Rose Needleworks is a cross-stitch and embroidery shop offering a wide range of supplies for needleworking. As a local craft store, Amanda aims to meet the needs of both traditional and modern crafters by offering products that cater to each segment of customers. Some products featured at Prairie Rose Needleworks include fabrics, patterns, embroidery kits, needles, and embroidery floss. In the future of Prairie Rose, Amanda wants to expand the selection of items, provide more classes, and set up craft retreats.
As a business owner, Amanda enjoys her interactions with her customers. It was one of her favorite parts to do while she was a librarian, and she is happy that she gets to carry it on with her business. She also enjoys staying on top of trends and making space for new designs, while still having traditional styles so that there is something for everyone.
Amanda’s Advice: Don’t wait around to start a business – just do it. Even if it is not something you are comfortable doing or doesn’t work out, at least you tried.
