Groom Curriculum, Emmetsburg

Groom Curriculum was founded in 2022 with a clear vision: “to create a program that provides accessible education for aspiring groomers, equipping them with the tools needed to build successful, sustainable careers.” Founded by three passionate, entrepreneurial-minded women, Groom Curriculum was destined for success.

The three founders are Sierra Elbert, a Professional Grooming Expert; Patricia Pierce, a Managing Educational Director and Curriculum Specialist; and Shelby Mitchell, a Graphic Designer.

Recognizing a Need

With Sierra’s years of industry experience, Patricia’s background in education, and Shelby’s design expertise, the founders recognized an opportunity to impact the pet grooming industry.

They discovered that many colleges are strategically located within 60 miles of most homes, making them ideal partners for training the future workforce. With this knowledge, the founders were determined to fill the gap by providing high-quality grooming education through local colleges that is accessible, practical, and able to reach students of all backgrounds.

What is Groom Curriculum?

“Groom Curriculum is a curriculum development company and pioneering innovation as the first college-accredited grooming program of its kind. Driven by data-driven research and a commitment to excellence, we empower students and educators alike. Our curriculum is tailored to accredited institutions, offering accessible and comprehensive training options.”

The 10-week continuing education workforce program specializes in dog grooming education with LMS (learn management systems) and hands-on instruction. With this instruction, groomers are ensured to have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the industry.

Grounded in faith and collaboration, Groom Curriculum’s mission strives to continue helping students build rewarding, long-term careers.

A Family Foundation

As Sierra began sharing her vision of Groom Curriculum with family members, they were quick to support her and her dream. She teamed up with Patricia, affectionally known as Aunt Patty, an educational consultant and curriculum specialist, and Shelby, her cousin by marriage and graphic designer.

From the beginning, Groom Curriculum’s team has been built on a foundation of resilience, accountability, and discipline. They always had an unwavering belief that Groom Curriculum would succeed, and they accredit this mindset to the success they have had!

“Choose Your Star – Learn!”

Inspired by the constellation of Canis Major, the “Greater Dog,” Groom Curriculum embodies the same relentless pursuit of excellence – destined to “catch whatever it chases.”

Their motto, “Choose Your Start – Learn!” emphasizes personal and professional growth, ensuring that aspiring groomers gain not only trade skills but also valuable life and employable skills. The curriculum supports well-rounded development that helps groomers succeed in a growing, in-demand profession.

Biggest Triumphs

After rigorous dedication, Groom Curriculum was accredited by the National Council of Continuing Education and Training. Earning this accreditation set the foundation for a quality educational research-based program centered on data-driven instruction.

“The ‘aha moments’ are the pivotal points of our great days! We all succeed when a student makes a breakthrough in understanding a concept or demonstrates confidence and pride in learning a new skill.”

Navigating Challenges

For Groom Curriculum, one of their biggest challenges was navigating the financial landscape. Finding investors who share your passion and believe in your vision can be difficult, but after some time, the founders were able to find an investor who aligned with their goals.

As the company continued to grow and succeed, Groom Curriculum was presented with a great opportunity – selling the business. Through the purchase, the founders have remained part owners and are involved in the company as it continues to grow.

Growing for the Future

“We’re excited about upcoming developments, including new events, more books, and an expanded curriculum. Our future plans are rooted in evolving alongside the grooming industry and focusing on training great groomers. As we often say, ‘If we teach one groomer how to safely groom a dog, we’re helping thousands of dogs.’ Now imagine teaching thousands of groomers every year – think of all the dogs we’ll keep safe by continuing to educate the industry!”

Advice to Entrepreneurs

“Be persistent. Success is built on pushing through even when it’s tough and progress feels slow. Step out of your comfort zone, trust the process, and know that every small effort adds to your goal. Hard work pays off – it just requires belief and perseverance.

Never underestimate the power of community and connection. Sometimes, just by offering a helping hand or being involved in your industry, you open doors you never expected. The person you assist today could introduce you to someone who will help move your dream forward tomorrow. Networking isn’t just about what you gain; it’s about building genuine relationships that bring you closer to success.

Most importantly, remember that your mind is the boss of your body. There will be days when you’re exhausted, and doubt creeps in, but that’s when you reset your mindset. It’s about reminding yourself why you started and pushing through the tiredness. Your mind can drive your body beyond the limits you thought possible. Say focused, keep believing, and you’ll be amazed at the heights you can reach.”

SBDC Experience

“Starting Groom Curriculum felt like riding a rollercoaster, with unexpected twists and turns. Seeking guidance from the SBDC [Northwest Iowa SBDC Regional Director, Larry Wajda] gave us the momentum we needed to power through the loop-de-loops and reach the next big hill. Their support has been invaluable in helping us stay on track and keep pushing forward.

Starting Groom Curriculum sometimes felt like running through a foggy forest, constantly trying to navigate and avoid obstacles. Seeking assistance from the SBDC was like lifting the blanket of fog, giving us the clarity and direction we needed to move forward confidently.”
