The Farmer's Daughters, Sidney
The Farmerās Daughters was founded in 2014. Located in Sidney Iowa, it is the main stop for vintage home dĆ©cor and floral needs for the Sidney and the surrounding communities. Owner Stacy Burge has always loved to buy anything vintage, but when it came time to move in with her new husband Ron Burge, they quickly realized some things needed to go so they started to set up in local pop-up markets in Omaha and Kansas City and traveled to Colorado as well. With Stacy continuing to buy antiques they soon outgrew their home and the other buildings on the farm, so they purchased a building in Sidney, Iowa. Then in 2017 when the florist in their town retired Stacy and Ron decided to expand and begin selling fresh flowers. āWe had a lot of folks ask us to do that, so we built a cooler in our building and thatās kind of how the flowers got started,ā said Stacy. They were able to show off their floral talents by decorating a 1939 Crosley for Junkstock, an extremely popular event in Omaha, Nebraska that attracts thousands of visitors. āWe kind of flower bombed that car! We had flowers coming out the windows, and out of the hood, and on top. It was great!ā said Stacy
As The Farmerās Daughters has grown over the years one thing that has not changed is their customer service. āWe find it very important to us. Being from a small town you know our customers are friends that weāve had forever.ā And with that deep connection Stacy and Ron have given back to the community whenever possible through donations for fundraisers and silent raffles and even donating flowers for homecoming at the local high school. āThese kids are families of our customers, and we like to give back and support the community. ā
With the help of the SBDC Stacy and Ron were able to get help setting up their website (www.theiowafarmersdaughters.com) and learn how to use social media to their advantage. āThe SBDC really became our biggest cheerleaders. Your website has so much good information and I was able to take advantage of classes both in person and online. The comments, posts, and check in emails from SBDC staff are so appreciatedā said Stacy talking about how the SBDC has helped them along the way. āIf someone is looking to start their own business you need to have a good work ethic and know that you are working for yourself. You also need patience. LOTS of PATIENCE,ā said Ron. Ron also said that knowing SBDC is here to help you on the way is a good thing.
Stacy and Ron plan on expanding their business in the near future by adding an additional delivery van and they are thinking about a second location. āIt would be kind of exciting to move north a little bit.ā said Stacy. Both Stacy and Ron are continuing to build their connection with the community in the many years to come.
