Matrix Construction, Des Moines
Nick Gorham and Jose Sanchez opened Matrix Construction in July of 2019. The company does residential and commercial construction, including general contracting, remodeling, additions, and interior buildouts.
Nick and Jose attribute the success of their business to their team. They have a motivated team that is willing to put in hard work. Finding out what worked for their company and doubling down on those things to define their company was another component of their success. Their biggest triumph thus far has been the first commercial project they did. This project consisted of a complete interior and exterior remodel of an office building in West Des Moines.
The path to their success was not easy though, Nick and Jose had a few challenges to overcome in order to start their business. Just figuring out how to get started was a struggle as there are so many different directions one can go in. Deciding which projects would make the best money for their business was a difficult process of trial and error.
Matrix Construction has some big plans for its future. Nick would like to see the business get into more commercial construction work and building commercial spaces for lease. Developing and investing in real estate long-term is another plan on the horizon. Nick also hopes to begin constructing townhomes that he can then lease out.
While growing their business and planning for the future, Nick and Jose have made sure to give back to the community their business is in. When Matrix Construction first started, they worked with Habitat for Humanity. They have continued to work with non-profit organizations as their business has grown. Giving back to their community is essential to them, and they are always looking for new ways that they can give back.
If anyone is looking to start their own small business, Nick says, “ask a lot of questions and reach out to people who have started a business. They will have experience [which will be beneficial to you in starting your own small business.]”
Working with Jenica Johnson, Regional Director of the Mid Iowa SBDC, has also helped Matrix Construction. Nick recommends new business owners reach out to their local SBDC and says, “Being able to sit down with Jenica and get her feedback on our ideas and what next steps I should take has been great.”
