Tannin Wine Bar & Craft Beer, Marshalltown

America’s Small Business Development Center Iowa (SBDC) is pleased to announce that Tannin Wine Bar & Craft Beer, located in Marshalltown, IA is the winner of the organization’s statewide February Small Business of the Month Award.

Megan and Gary Lanfier, took over Tannin Wine Bar & Craft Beer located in Marshalltown in January 2023! Megan had been working part time since May 2022 and was approached by the previous owners to purchase the business from them. They say the support from the community to keep this business open has been huge.

Megan and Gary said, “Our staff has worked very hard to make Tannin successful. They bring ideas to us and they see the vision of the business as well.” They have needed to lean into their staff and community as they both work full-time jobs outside of running Tannin and have three daughters at home. They said that Tannin has now become a family business were you can find the oldest daughter helping the chef in the back, their middle daughter helping with dishes and stocking, and their youngest bringing waters to the table and striking up good conversation with everyone. The support of the community is something that Megan and Gary have been so appreciative towards, so they have been giving back by donating simple baskets or gift certificates to fundraisers along with participating in the community events that the local Chamber or the Business District puts on.

When looking for help with planning and bank financing to purchase Tannin they reached out to the Iowa State University SBDC where they got connected to Regional Director, Leah Locke. They worked together to get multiple business questions answered and were able to help with the business plan that was needed for the funding through the Small Business Administration. Megan and Gary said, “Leah even made it to our opening night and ribbon cutting! Truly amazing individuals at the SBDC.”
