Growing up in Morning Sun, Mindy Kerr had always dreamed of opening her own bar. In June of 2017 Mindy and her husband, Brad, decided to give her dreams a foundation and opened The Kerr Spot. The Kerr Spot is Morning Sun’s go-to hangout spot where you can order everything from “Hawkeye Shots” to their crowd-pleasing pizza. They’ve even held fish frys on game days and are hosting an upcoming costume party.
Mindy came to America’s SBDC to work on a business plan for The Kerr Spot with Southeastern Iowa’s Regional Director Janine Clover. “I was extremely satisfied with the help we got from Janine. She was very thorough and helped us with things we weren’t aware we needed in the business plan. She really knew what she was doing.” Mindy mentioned that after working with the SBDC she has been able to “grow the business, bring in more customers, and extend their marketing.”
The Kerr Spot places an emphasis on giving back to the Morning Sun community that has given them so much support. As a business, they donate to the city’s Fourth of July festivities and to charity events that benefit individuals with terminal illnesses. Mindy plans to continue to grow the business over the next few years and looks forward to what the future has in store for The Kerr Spot. “I’m very thankful that the SBDC was there and has gotten us this far along at this point.”
